BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS IN MIGRANTE BASKETBALL LEAGUE E-mail

Vancouver, B.C. – The second Basketball League organized by MIGRANTE B.C., a community-based Filipino migrants’ organization, held its Finals Game on Sunday, December 6, at the St. Andrews School gymnasium on Fraser and East 45th street. Basketball is considered the national sport of the Philippines and Filipinos are some of the world’s most avid followers and players of the sport.

From the first Sunday in October, eight local Pinoy basketball teams played the elimination rounds, including the quarter, semi-finals and the final round. The teams were CITY HIGH (with Coach Regz), BLACK HAWK (with Coach Teddy), JCV (with Coach Oscar), YAHOO (with Coach Jason), STORM (with Coach Teddy), AGENTS (with Coach Jack), ASH &16 (with Coach Oliver) and the 33rd BOYZ (with Coach Tristan). The games were refereed by Jake Frendol and Referee Val and organized by Commissioners Ronald Ordinario and Jomi Tabella.

Basketball Team Agents was proclaimed the Champion Team, with the First runner up going to Team JCV and Second Runner up going to Ash & 16. Ron Jason Valdez was named the League Most Valuable Player and Arjay Neyra as the Finals Most Valuable Player. The Three-Point Shoot-Out Player was awarded to Benjo Artemia. Named to the Mythical Five were Arjay Neyra, Ly Jackson, Ryan Lacomel, Ryan Arizana, Armon Galendez and JR Lacomel. The most organized Team award went to City High Team.

The trophies, plaques and medals were handed out by MLA for Vancouver-Kensington Mable Elmore, Manila Express Representative Rene Juliano,Edward Teodoro, Investment Advisor of RBC Dominion Securities, and Migrante  BC core members Chit Bautista and Jane Ordinario. Team members joined in the Migrante Kids Christmas Party that followed the games.

MIGRANTE B.C. was launched in September 14, 2008 to honor the legacy of the late Anakpawis Member of Congress Crispin “Ka Bel” Beltran who had always fought for the rights and welfare of migrant workers. Before his unexpected death in the Philippines, Ka Bel visited Vancouver in April 2008 with Congress members Satur Ocampo and Luz Ilagan as part of the progressive Philippine Parliamentarians Tour of Canada.The Support Committee for the this Tour (which would later become Migrante B.C.) welcomed the solons, particularly “Ka Bel,” into their homes and hearts.
